Copenhagen [Denmark], January 15: Denmark is starting to breed mink again after the business was stopped and a mass cull carried out due to fears that the animals might contribute to the spread of Covid-19.
A shipment of several hundred mink reached a farm in Thyholm in north-western Jutland on Saturday, after Copenhagen authorized mink breeding again.
More mink are expected to arrive in Denmark in the coming weeks, where they are bred for their fur.
Denmark was once a leading mink breeding nation, but in November 2020, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called for a cull of the country's 15 million mink, after suggestions that they could spread disease.
The step was controversial in Denmark, and one minister later resigned.
It later transpired that the cull had no legal basis and legislation was introduced after the fact.
During this period, mink breeding was temporarily banned, but has been permitted again since the turn of the year.
