Hanoi [Vietnam], November 4: Appearing on the program 'Multidimensional Mirror', artist Tú Quyen shared insights into the staging techniques and unique features that attract audiences to the Thien Lý cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) troupe.
The Thien Ly Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) troupe is considered a phenomenon in Ho Chi Minh City, where performances are always sold out despite having a small, intimate space in line with the current minimalist trend. Sharing about the challenge of bringing familiar plays from large, grand stages into a confined space, artist Tu Quyen said that the troupe's stage is only a mere 4 square meters .
However, thanks to director Leon Quang Le's vision and perspective, it was designed with depth by creating box-shaped stage layers and constructing the wings as small, inverted U-shaped planks to create a 3D effect as if there were multiple layers.
"Necessity is the mother of invention. Even though it's only 4 square meters , with Leon Quang Le's perspective, the stage will have depth. That means we won't use curtains like a large stage, but rather a box-like stage, with small wooden panels as wings, making it look a little wider from the outside. Of course, there won't be many props and scenery; we'll only include those that are absolutely necessary and symbolic," she shared.
The troupe almost completely eliminated elaborate props, keeping only the essentials, and scene changes were made quickly, within 1-2 minutes, by drawing the curtain. This helped the performances maintain a perfect pace and fit within the allotted time.
