Brasilia [Brazil], May 5: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday swore in the new head of the Institutional Security Bureau of the Presidency of the Republic (known by its Spanish acronym GSI), Gen. Marcos Amaro dos Santos.
Dos Santos takes over the post from Gen. Marco Goncalves Dias, who stepped down on April 19.
Goncalves Dias resigned after images were released showing him inside the presidential headquarters of Planalto Palace in Brasilia, interacting with a mob of former president Jair Bolsonaro's supporters who stormed government buildings on Jan. 8 to protest his loss at the polls.
Since he stepped down, the executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice Ricardo Cappelli had served as acting head of the GSI.
Dos Santos, 65, is an army general and was responsible for the security of former president Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016).
