Mexico City [Mexico], August 7: A popular Mexican influencer was shot dead while livestreaming on a street in the country's violence-plagued state of Sinaloa, authorities said on Wednesday. Gunmen deliberately opened fire on Cesar Gastelum in the city of Culiacan, security officials said.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said an investigation was under way to arrest those responsible and establish the motive. Gastelum had more than 600,000 followers on TikTok and also posted on Kick and other platforms, mainly sharing humorous content about daily life and food in Sinaloa.
At the time of the attack, he was standing outside a fast-food restaurant with two other men dressed as delivery riders when two men approached on a motorcycle and opened fire only on him. Mexico's Security Cabinet said investigators were also examining whether the killing was linked to some of Gastelum's content. In several posts, he had alluded to "a faction of a criminal organization," the Cabinet said on X.
Sinaloa, in north-western Mexico, is the home state of some of the country's most powerful drug bosses.
