New York (United States of America), February 2: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday strongly condemned Sunday's deadly terror attack on Afrik Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, which left nine people dead and more than 10 others injured, said his spokesman.
Guterres extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to those injured. He reiterated the support and solidarity of the United Nations with the people and federal government of Somalia in their pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman.
For his part, the secretary-general's special representative for Somalia, James Swan, said he was appalled by this reprehensible and senseless attack on a venue frequented by innocent civilians.
According to reports, al-Shabab militants attacked the popular hotel in Mogadishu on Sunday evening and engaged in an hours-long siege before being dislodged by the Somali security forces.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was targeting government officials who were meeting in the hotel.
